This question is answered.
Hi folks,

Ubuntu released new LTS release few days ago, it released an image https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/query/xenial/server/released.current.txt but it is not publicly available. What is going on? Is amazon vetting it or something? Do you know when it may become available?
Best,

Michal

Hi,

The Ubuntu AMIs are released by Canonical/Ubuntu themselves. You may checkout their AMI locater (https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/locator/ec2/) for the availability of a new AMI or join their mailing list as mentioned in their FAQ page here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EC2FAQ).

Regards,
Jayakrishnan L

Someone @ AWS - the current 14.04 AMI shown in the wizard (what I consider the "blessed" one) is not on the Ubuntu list.

Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS (HVM), SSD Volume Type - ami-fce3c696

Is there going to be a "blessed" version of 16.04 that is graduated to the wizard, or is the official suggestion to now use the Ubuntu one (and it has the correct cloud-config, etc, just like the AWS 14.04 ones)

The "golden" one is by owner "099720109477"

Looking at the community AMIs for that owner I see tons of Ubuntu, and one xenial - but it's PV, not HVM.

At one point, this was the "official" owning account:
http://ubuntu-smoser.blogspot.com/2011/07/how-to-find-right-ubuntu-ami-on-ec2.html

It's the same owner for the ones listed on https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/locator/ec2/ so I guess it is the same stuff.

What confuses me is I cannot locate the AMI from the quick start back at the cloud-images site, and it appears to have a complete history.

Trusty LTS HVM SSD: ami-fce3c696
AMI Name: ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-trusty-14.04-amd64-server-20160114.5

Appears the same for Xenial is ami-840910ee
AMI Name: ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20160420.3

Maybe that is the reason - the new trusty is 20160114.5 and is not on the list (perhaps the list isn't getting refreshed with minor updates)

I think this exercise proved the point I was hoping to figure out. :)

All official Ubuntu AMIs are listed in Ubuntu Amazon EC2 AMI Finder. Use the dropdown filters at the bottom of the page to narrow down the list to just the AWS region you want, e.g. us-west-2, and the Ubuntu version you want. In this case, that would be 16.04 LTS. According to the page, there are official 16.04 AMIs for all regions except cn-north-1 and us-gov-west-1. If you are in one of these regions, copying an Ubuntu AMI from another region should work.

An Ubuntu AMI not appearing on the EC2 Quick Start list when you launch an instance does not mean it is not official. I have to search for the AMI ID on the Community AMIs page to use it.
