Sporadicity is due to issue only occurring on one of the three IPs assigned to the domain us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com. In the meantime until fixed, one can work around it by manually mapping said domain to one of the good IPs (10.202.26.15 or 10.252.111.96) in /etc/hosts

I think there might be a bad IP address in their rotation. Does the issue persist if you do apt-get clean followed by apt-get update?

I just launched an Ubuntu AMI in us-east-1 (ami-a29943cb) and did the same thing:

The issues with the archives was resolved on the 28th. Any latent issues
should be resolvable "sudo apt-get clean". If the meta-data is stale,
then you will get 404's (HTTP code for not found) if there is a newer
version available in the archive. I would advise all affect to run "sudo
apt-get clean" before reporting continuing problems.

However, a "destination unreachable" is a different issue; the issue on
the 28th was the result of 403 HTTP errors. If you are in VPC, then you
will need to switch to a different archive (i.e.
us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com.s3.amazonaws.com or arhcive.ubuntu.com)
Can you please provide the results of:
- host us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com
- curl -I
http://us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com//ubuntu/dists/lucid/Release

Thanks,
Ben

I still have the same issue:

After
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get udpate
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I get tons of "Forbidden" errors like these:

Same problem here. I've been using Ubuntu 12.04-LTS instances during the last days and problems started today. As a temporary fix I'm replacing "ec2" sources by Ubuntu ones.

sudo sed -i 's/us-east-1.ec2/us/g' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update

Hi,

I just started 12.04 and replicated the 403 error on sudo apt-get update.

But running sudo apt-clean fixed this for me.

We are experiencing this issue again while provisioning our Natty-based servers. Where is the best place to report this to Canonical, or can someone at Amazon escalate with them?

Thanks,
Andrew
